Mouflon

Hunting the mouflon (Ovis musimon) is one of the most valued modalities in Spain due to the toughness of the stalks and the cunning of the animal. This big game hunting modality is highly appreciated for its difficulty and the astute behavior of the animal, practiced mainly by stalking in high mountain areas of Spain and Europe.

Its management varies according to the autonomous community, being a key species of big game hunting in the Peninsula. Males sport impressive spiral-shaped horns that make them a highly coveted trophy. The experience is rewarding but requires good physical condition, stealth, and respect for this magnificent animal.

Habitat and Distribution

Mouflon can be found in several regions of Spain, especially in hunting reserves and national parks of the peninsula, particularly in mountainous areas. They can be found in high mountain zones with great density and quality populations.

The mouflon is distributed across different mountain ranges and hunting estates in Spain. The main areas include:

  • Castilla y León: One of the main regions for mouflon hunting
  • Extremadura: Mountainous areas with excellent populations
  • Pyrenees: Catalonia and Aragón, especially in high mountain areas
  • Valencia Region: Mountainous areas of the region
  • Sierra Morena: Hunting reserves in Andalusia
  • Castilla-La Mancha: Specific hunting areas

The mouflon is a gregarious animal that forms groups separated by sex during most of the year. Adult males usually live in small groups or solitary, while females form larger herds with their offspring.

They are crepuscular animals, being most active at dawn and dusk. During the day they seek shelter in wooded or rocky areas, and at night they move to grazing areas.

Hunting the Mouflon

Mouflon hunting is practiced mainly by stalking in high mountain areas of Spain and Europe. Powerful caliber rifles and appropriate mountain equipment are used. The rut of males, between October and November, is the best time to find large trophies, as males are more active and easier to locate.

Legal hunting period: Generally extends from October to May, depending on the legislation of each autonomous community.

Rutting season: The rut takes place mainly in the months of October and November. These dates turn out to be the best time for stalking and hunting the species, as males are more active, less cautious, and easier to locate, displaying their best trophies.

Winter months are also good for stalking, when snow pushes the animals to lower areas.

Stalking mouflon is a rewarding experience that requires:

  • Good physical condition: High mountain terrain demands excellent conditioning
  • Absolute stealth: The mouflon has very developed senses, especially sight
  • Knowledge of terrain: It is essential to know the animal's preferences and routes
  • Patience: Often you must wait long hours to achieve the optimal shot
  • Powerful caliber rifle: Necessary for shooting distances in mountains
  • Appropriate mountain equipment: Technical clothing, proper footwear, and navigation gear
  • Quality optics: Powerful binoculars and scope are essential

The shooting distance is usually considerable, normally between 100 and 250 meters, requiring mastery of long-distance shooting. The toughness of the stalks and the cunning of the animal make this one of the most valued modalities.

The mouflon trophy is valued mainly by the development of the horns. The most important aspects are:

  • Horn length: Measured following the external curve
  • Base thickness: The thicker, the higher the score
  • Spiral development: The best trophies complete more than one turn
  • Symmetry: Equality between both horns adds points

A gold mouflon in the CIC system exceeds 230 points, while silver ones range from 210-230 points. The most exceptional trophies can exceed 250 points.
